Maintaining your BMX race bike is essential for performance, safety, and durability. Here's a clear list of items that need regular maintenance, broken into key categories:

🔩 1. Drivetrain
  • Chain:
    • Clean & lube regularly.
    • Check for stretch or rust.
  • Sprockets (front and rear):
    • Inspect for wear (shark-tooth pattern = replace).
  • Cranks & Bottom Bracket:
    • Check for play or creaks.
    • Tighten crank arms and inspect spindle.
    • Service BB bearings as needed.

🚴‍♂️ 2. Wheels & Tires
  • Tires:
    • Maintain proper PSI (80–110 PSI).
    • Check for wear, cuts, or embedded debris.
  • Tubes:
    • Check for slow leaks.
  • Rims:
    • Inspect for dents or cracks.
  • Spokes:
    • Check for tension; tighten if loose.
  • Hubs & Bearings:
    • Spin smoothly with no play.
    • Grease or service sealed bearings if rough or gritty.

🛠️ 3. Brakes (if equipped)
  • Brake pads:
    • Check for wear and proper alignment.
  • Brake cable:
    • Smooth pull with no fraying or rust.
  • Brake lever:
    • Adjust for feel and reach.
  • Brake arm and spring tension:
    • Ensure even pull and return.

🔧 4. Steering & Front End
  • Headset:
    • Check for looseness/play.
    • Bearings should feel smooth when turning.
  • Stem:
    • Tighten bolts evenly.
  • Bars:
    • Ensure they’re aligned and not rotating under pressure.

⚙️ 5. Frame & Hardware
  • Frame:
    • Inspect for cracks or stress marks (especially welds).
  • Bolts & Fasteners:
    • Check torque on all bolts: stem, cranks, seat post, axle nuts/bolts.
  • Seat & Post:
    • Tighten and adjust as needed.

🧼 6. General Maintenance
  • Wash bike regularly (especially after dusty or muddy races).
  • Lubricate moving parts (chain, pivot points, cables).
  • Inspect before each race—especially tires, chain, brakes, and bar/stem setup.
